Nancy Sharma’s journey demonstrates how HealthCarePlus’s Grants for Good investment in passionate individuals creates ripple effects that benefit entire communities.
When Nancy Sharma first heard about HealthCarePlus’s Grants for Good initiative through her union, PSA, she wasn’t sure if she qualified. Today, as she approaches the final stretch of her Master of Applied Social Work at Massey University, Nancy’s story is a fantastic example of the transformative power of supporting passionate individuals who are committed to making a difference.
Based in Auckland, Nancy juggles full-time study with work and family responsibilities while completing her second field placement. Her study programme combines theoretical learning, applied research and hands-on practice. It’s a demanding schedule that would challenge anyone.
“I’ve always been drawn to work that helps people overcome challenges and feel empowered,” Nancy says. “My previous experiences in education and community engagement showed me the importance of social work and inspired me to pursue it professionally.”
The HealthCarePlus Grant for Good came at a crucial time. Nancy’s research focus on workplace awareness and wellbeing reflects her broader interest in how knowledge, advocacy and systemic support can improve people’s everyday experiences, particularly in the areas of employment and rights. However, managing the financial pressures of study alongside existing commitments was becoming overwhelming.
“The grant helped cover my tuition fees and supported my travel and accommodation for compulsory workshops,” Nancy shares. “Without this financial support, balancing study, work and family commitments would have been much more stressful.” The impact extended far beyond the dollars and cents. “It’s not just about the financial relief; it’s the encouragement and belief in my potential that has truly meant a lot."
What sets Nancy’s experience apart is how the grant provided both practical support and emotional validation. “It’s more than financial support,” she says. “It’s a vote of confidence in my journey,” she reflects. “It gave me the motivation and stability I needed to stay focused and committed to my professional development.”
Nancy’s advice to future applicants is refreshingly direct:
“Don’t hesitate. Just be honest and true to your purpose. If your heart’s in it, this grant will walk beside you on the journey.”
Nancy found the application process clear and well-supported, particularly appreciating how responsive and encouraging the team was when she needed clarification.
As Nancy prepares to complete her degree by the end of 2025, she hopes to transition into a social work role that focuses on strengths-based, culturally responsive practices, while continuing to develop skills in research and policy for long-term systemic change.
“The Master’s programme equips me with both the knowledge and the confidence to make a real difference in people’s lives,” Nancy says. “Whether through direct support, advocacy or policy engagement, I aim to contribute to stronger, more inclusive communities across Aotearoa.”
