Nikki’s journey through tertiary education in her forties has been a huge personal challenge, but one that brings great rewards, both for her and her community.

Nikki, a resilient mother of three and a dedicated healthcare professional on the paramedic pathway, has been on an extraordinary journey of perseverance and passion. Her story is not just about overcoming financial obstacles but also about the transformative power of education and the unwavering dedication to making a positive impact in the world.

With just one semester left in her Health Sciences (Paramedicine) degree at Whitireia, Nikki reflects on the challenges she faced. “Working and studying full-time has been a real challenge,” she shares. “Money has been extremely tight over the last three years.” Despite the financial strain of being a single-income household raising three children, Nikki's determination remained unshaken.

Nikki’s inspiration to pursue a career as a paramedic stems from her desire to give back. “As a severe asthmatic for a significant part of my life, I knew the difference medical personnel can make,” she explains. However, it was her experience in Christchurch post-earthquake that solidified her resolve.

“The things we saw and did there were truly life-changing,” she says. “The Paramedic qualification would have given me even more skills to alleviate the pain and suffering we encountered.”

When Nikki heard about the HealthCarePlus Grants for Good, it was a ray of hope for her, amidst financial uncertainty. “A friend in Fire & Emergency New Zealand suggested it to me, which I am very grateful for,” Nikki recalls.

Applying for the grant was a straightforward and user-friendly process, but the impact of receiving it was immeasurable.

“Next semester, I can just focus on my study without the huge financial worry that studying brings. I don’t know how to express the difference this has made,” she shares. “It was such a huge weight off my shoulders financially. I’ve just booked flights for the final semester and reimbursement came through quickly and easily.”

For Nikki, the grant is not just about financial assistance; it’s about realising her dreams and making a difference. “It means everything!” she exclaims. "

Her message to others who may be hesitant about applying for a grant is one of encouragement and empowerment.

“I would definitely encourage them to apply,” she asserts. “When you love something and have a goal, anything is possible. It just takes hard work and commitment.”

Nikki also points that many other grants available are aimed at school leavers. The HealthCarePlus grant is open to all ages, including people like Nikki who are at a different stage of life. Looking ahead, Nikki's aspirations are clear.

“I’ve been with the ambulance service for 18 years now,” she reflects. “With the kids now grown, I am aiming to be a Paramedic before I turn 50 – that’s next year.”

For us, Nikki’s journey exemplifies the essence of the Grants for Good program – providing opportunities for individuals to pursue their passions and make a meaningful impact. As she nears the completion of her degree, Nikki’s story may hopefully inspire others who are determined to follow their dreams and make a difference in the lives of others.
