We are delighted to see our funding and resources are helping Michael Waller at Westland High School.
Through our 'Grants for Good' funding, they have been able to implement a project-based learning program for at-risk students. With the help of the funding, the students have been able to take ownership of their learning by creating a business and applying their skills in literacy, research, and cooking. The program has resulted in increased attendance and engagement among the students, especially among Maori students.
I am a Welsh Maori high school teacher. I teach English and Academy here on the coast. I coach rugby and read way too much for my own good.
Looking at running a project based learning class with at risk students to improve their attendance and achievement.
Too many Maori students observed to be selecting truancy as a better option to going to class. Too many students at risk of failing. So as the rugby coach at the school, I felt I had some say in motivating students to be at school and in class to be in the rugby team. However, for the last three years we haven’t had a 1 XV team, so it’s been difficult to positively influence attendance. And because we’re a small team with an even smaller budget, new initiatives are almost impossible to get off the ground.
A place where one class can make a big difference.
My school could not fund this course. A small rural school with only 320 students the school were not in a position to fund the initiative I hoped could make a difference.
Great. It takes time. Don't think you can get it done in a free period!
So far the results are outstanding. Huge lift in students' attendance. Huge lift in engagement.
Seeing these kids come back to school re-engage, it is priceless.
I know the paperwork can seem daunting. However after 20 years of teaching this has been my best year. It is huge value of the time invested.
Be clear about the value of your desired outcomes. Think about the positive impact on the community above that of the classroom.
Students staying at school, opening up relevant learning pathways that they have co-constructed.
Keeping students at school, supporting those at risk of leaving school without key qualifications. Giving confidence boosting life skills to students who might fall through the cracks
