This early childhood educator is seeking to make a difference not just with the children he teaches but also with his fellow teachers.
In the dynamic realm of early childhood education (ECE) in New Zealand, educators like Jiyong Choi are continuously striving to elevate standards and nurture young minds. Jiyong’s journey from civil engineering in South Korea and the United Kingdom to ECE teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand reflects a deep-seated commitment to shaping a brighter future for children. Now pursuing a Master of Educational Leadership at the University of Waikato, Jiyong finds himself at the centre of learning and advocacy, enthused by the importance of teacher wellbeing in educational excellence.
Reflecting on his transition from engineering to education, Jiyong remarks,
“The more I work in early childhood education, the more I discover the importance of teachers’ wellbeing.”
This realisation fuelled his decision to focus on enhancing teacher welfare through advanced studies.
“I hope I can contribute to enhancing teachers’ wellbeing through doing the Master in Educational Leadership,” Jiyong shares, underscoring his commitment to making a difference in the sector.
Through his academic pursuits, Jiyong encountered the HealthCarePlus Grant for Good program.
“The application process was clear and straightforward so I was able to complete my application without much difficulty,” says Jiyong.
Upon being awarded the grant, Jiyong expresses gratitude, acknowledging its significance in alleviating financial barriers and enabling him to continue his studies.
For Jiyong, like many of our grantees, the grant goes beyond just monetary assistance; it signifies a community’s belief in the transformative power of education.
“The grant has been helping me continue not only studying the MEdLeadership degree but also being able to share what I have learned from my study with my teaching team and organisation,” he says, highlighting the broader ripple effects of support within the ECE community.
To those hesitant about applying for grants, Jiyong offers reassurance: “It is definitely worth applying.” He advises future applicants to engage thoroughly with the provided information and articulate their study plans effectively. Through his journey, Jiyong aims to cultivate a culture of wellbeing within the ECE sector, envisioning a future where educators feel valued and empowered to shape young minds with passion and purpose.
